In my last post I said the post was delayed because of a sailing trip (Sunday the 29th of May). A very lovely sailing trip I have to say! The last time we went was with Peters’ birthday and that was the 19th of April. I will make a post and video about that too in my catch-up ‘Making a blog’-series. Already some time ago, so it was a welcome change of scenery from the boat yard and the studio. And finally, Peter could fish again. One hobby I don’t get. Although I went fishing with my grandfather when I was young and I did like that, now I just see the killing of a perfectly free, happily living animal. But OK, enough said.
It was a wonderful trip. We were invited by Birgit and Martina. They run the only sailing kiteschool of Bonaire: Chogogo Kiteschool Bonaire. The boat is a 50-year old trimaran, sailed over from South-Africa and is in need of some repairing here and there (not to compare with LIV ;)), is very well equipped with all the kites, kiteboards, harnesses, but also a small kitchen, toilet and an area to sit an relax and BBQ! Always really nice to join the day with them!
Fish identification
We sailed to the mooring ‘Windsock’, right next to Te Amo beach and Donkey Beach and went in the water for some snorkeling and swimming-guided-fishing (ask Peter and Emile ;)). I wanted to make another snorkeling video but unfortunately I didn’t put stabilization on, so it seemed more like a motion sickness simulator. What a shame! I even saw an post-larval juvenile smooth trunkfish! The cutest thing, it moves like a small ball-shaped-robot. And because Lars (the husband of Martina) is a snorkeling-guide, and they dive a lot together, they have fish- & reef-identification and fish behavior books so I could identify what it was! Those books are amazing! I might make a few blogs about fish identification too. It is such an amazing world under water and I like to share my enthusiasm for it.
Can you find it?
So you have twelve different fish identification groups. The first one is Disks & Ovals/Colorful. In the video (see below) I pause at one fish of this category, the French Angelfish. I also pause the video at a Blue Striped Grunt, of the third identification category Sloping Heads/Tapered body. The Smooth Trunkfish (the above mentioned juvenile post-larval one) is a Boxfish and belongs to the tenth identification group Odd-Shaped Swimmers. Just to get an idea.
Here’s the short video with the fishing, snorkeling and sailing of that day!
